A stock of medical supplies and personal protective equipment financed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) was delivered on May 12 to Tajikistan's Ministry of Healthcare and Social Protection of Population to support the country's response to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, ADB Tajikistan Resident Mission said. The supplies costing about $100,000 comprise 25 items, including masks, gloves, gowns, protective suits, thermoscanners, hygiene sets, antiseptics, various tubes, and other medical stuff. As of May 12, the Tajik Ministry of Healthcare and Social Protection of Population reported 729 confirmed COVID-19 cases across the country, including 23 deaths. |read|

President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev instructed the Central Bank to simplify the terms of lending to small businesses and family entrepreneurship, Trend reports citing the press service of the president. At the meeting held on May 19, the president stressed that all the restrictions imposed on entrepreneurs in obtaining loans for products, equipment, raw materials and working capital should be removed. It is noted that it's necessary to stimulate trade, expand consumer credit in order to increase purchasing power of the population. |read|

At the online meeting initiated by the Uzbek side, the parties considered further practical measures to launch the Uzbekistan-Kyrgyzstan-China railroad project. President of the Kyrgyz Republic Sooronbay Jeenbekov signed the Law "On Ratification of the Agreement on the Financing Mechanism (Special Operations) between the Kyrgyz Republic and the Asian Development Bank, signed on December 25, 2019 in Bishkek," the press service of the President reported. The law was adopted by the Jogorku Kenesh of the Kyrgyz Republic on April 30, 2020. In accordance with this Law, the Ministry of Finance of the Kyrgyz Republic is required to notify the Asian Development Bank on the implementation of domestic procedures necessary for the entry into force of this Agreement by the Kyrgyz Republic. |read|

The European Delegation in Tajikistan and UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) Tajikistan delivered critical medical supplies to support the Ministry of Health and Social Protection of Tajikistan in the battle against COVID-19, the Delegation of the European Union to Tajikistan said. On May 17, a shipment organised by UNICEF Tajikistan and financed by the European Delegation in Tajikistan of approximately 13 tons of vital medical supplies arrived in Dushanbe. Tashkent, Uzbekistan, May 18, 2020—IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, and Ipak Yuli Bank have signed an agreement that allows the bank to better manage its currency risk and provide local currency finance for small and medium enterprises, which are key drivers of economic growth in Uzbekistan. Under the agreement, IFC and Ipak Yuli Bank will execute cross-currency swap transactions under an International Swaps and Derivatives Association (ISDA) Master Agreement, a standard document that governs over-the-counter derivative transactions. It allows the bank to hedge its foreign currency-denominated funding and better manage its assets and liabilities mismatches. |read|

Afghanistan to receive over $600 million of foreign aid for COVID-19 response

The international community has so far promised more than $600 million to Afghanistan to help the country in its struggle against the COVID-19 outbreak, Afghan broadcaster TOLOnews reported. Of that amount, $100 million was provided by the World Bank, 117 million euros was pledged by the EU, $50 million was pledged by the Asian Development Bank, $35 million was promised by the US, and $220 million in loans were granted by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Other countries such as China, the United Arab Emirates, Iran and the Czech Republic also provided material aid - in many cases in the form of medical equipment - to the Afghan health system. |read|
