Uzbekistan to receive Japanese machinery worth $7.3 mln for free

This year Uzbekistan plans to take a number of measures to assess the implications of WTO membership and prepare proposals for institutional reforms, as well as the creation of an interdepartmental commission that will deal with issues of joining the organization. A number of large countries-members of the organization have already expressed their support in this process. Uzbekistan applied for membership in the World Trade Organization in 1994. |read|

Uzbekistan's flagship air carrier Uzbekistan Airways has taken delivery of its third Boeing 787-8. Sporting tail number UK78703, the aircraft operated its first commercial flight from Tashkent to Moscow on May 20 with 244 passengers on board, the airline reports. The latest addition provides 270 seats - 24 in business and 246 in economy class - compared with the 246-seat first two Dreamliners in Uzbekistan Airways's fleet, and also features a crew rest compartment. |read|

The delegations of the Foreign Trade Ministry of Uzbekistan and the EU Working Party on Eastern Europe and Central Asia held talks on May 23 in Tashkent. "One of the ways to improve trade with the European Union could be granting tariff preferences to Uzbekistan," Foreign Trade Minister Jamshid Hozhaev said. The Asaka Automobile Plant of GM Uzbekistan has received the third degree of quality integration into production processes - the BIQ (Built-In Quality) III certificate, the Jahon information agency reports. Possession of BIQ III will allow the Uzbek car factory to master almost the entire line of cars on global GM platforms. For today, cars are produced under the brands Chevrolet and Ravon, represented by Matiz, Spark (R2), Nexia (R3), Cobalt (R4), and Lacetti (Gentra). |read|

Uzbekistan set to develop Islamic banking system

Uzbekistan is joining the rising number of Central Asian nations to develop a Shariah-compliant banking system given its large Muslim population and rising demand for financial services aligned to Islamic beliefs. This month, the Uzbek government issued a draft resolution to create infrastructure for Islamic banking and finance in the country, as posted on the official government website. The aim is to create alternative financing opportunities in the former Soviet republic, expand the range of banking and financial services and open the doors for Islamic investors from the Middle East and possibly Southeast Asia. |read|
