8 December 2011

http://www.uznews.net of 12/8/2011 - A new European Union representative office is due to be opened formally in Tashkent before the end of this year.

Katherine Ashton, the EU's head of foreign policy and security policy, has recently appointed 64-year-old Belgian, Norbert Jousten to head the EU's Delegation to Uzbekistan. From 2009 to 2011, he was Head of the EU Delegation to Kazakhstan.

Preparations for the establishment of the new EU mission in Uzbekistan were the task of the EU European External Action Service diplomat, Andrzej Shimek. Mr Shimek took up his post in Uzbekistan in May this year, and he was charged with finding a residence and securing the necessary accreditations to allow the EU delegation to establish its mission in Uzbekistan.

The agreement to establish the EU's diplomatic mission (delegation) in Uzbekistan was signed during the President Islam Karimov's visit to Brussels on 24th January 2011. During the visit he also signed a memorandum of cooperation between the Republic of Uzbekistan and the EU on energy and a memorandum on developing technical cooperation with the European Commission from 2011-2013.
