Uzbekistan to set up a commission for Radiation and Nuclear Safety

24 December 2012

http://en.trend.az of 12/24/2012 - The Uzbek government has decided to establish a commission for Radiation and Nuclear Safety, which will coordinate cooperation between authorities, ministries and agencies in the creation and implementation of a unified state system for the forecasting, early detection of and response to radiation accidents (SPRVR), a source in government circles informed Trend.

According to the document, the problems in the framework of the system of forecasting, early detection and response to radiation accidents will be addressed mainly by emergency and search and rescue teams belonging to the Ministry of Emergency Forces of Uzbekistan.

The mobilization of Ministry of Defense units and institutions to take part in measures aimed at preventing, containing and eliminating the consequences of radiation accidents will only be carried out by decision of the President.

The document also provides for annual on-site thematic special tactical exercises to simulate the interaction of forces and means of radiation accident forecasting, early detection and response systems.

The law "On Radiation Safety" was adopted by Uzbekistan in 2000. In April of 2011, a number of amendments were introduced. In particular, structures implementing state and industrial control have been determined. According to the amendments "social control in the field of radiation protection is carried out by self-governing bodies, non-profit organizations and citizens."
