Uzbek President Islam Karimov and Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev confirmed a common position on regional water use. Their statement was made on Friday at a briefing for the media.

"Today, we formulated a common position in regards to fair water use in Central Asia, based on the solution of water and energy problems exclusively through strict observance of generally recognized norms of international law and taking into account the interests of all states in the region," President Karimov said.

He stressed that any hydraulic facilities planned for construction in the upper reaches of rivers, such as Rogun and Kambarata-1, should be required to undergo an international independent examination under the auspices of the UN and be agreed upon with the countries in the lower reaches of the Amu Darya and Syr Darya.

He reiterated that it is about the construction of giant-scale dams - Rogun with a height of 330 meters and Kambaratinskaya - 260 meters.

Their placement in the tectonic fault zone with seismicity of 9-10 points and the possibility of

Most dangerous technogeneous and environmental disasters testify to the obvious need for such examinations and agreements, the head of Uzbekistan said.

President Nursultan Nazarbayev confirmed that the position of the two countries on water issues is largely the same.

"We want to send a friendly message to neighbors that together we will solve all of our issues. This also concerns the construction of new hydropower plants on rivers," Nazarbayev said.

According to him, to sit down at the negotiating table, to take into account each other's interests ensures transparency.

According to him, the sides should sit down at the negotiating table and consider each other's interests by ensuring transparency.

"Conduct an examination, convince us. It is not about Karimov and Nazarbayev. We need to convince people that they will no be flooded and farmers will not be left with no water. And we are ready to meet you," - said the president of Kazakhstan.

And we will go for a compromise with you," Kazakh President said.

As previously reported, a Strategic Partnership Agreement was signed during the visit of the President of Kazakhstan to Uzbekistan. The Agreement, in particular, confirms a single coherent position on the development of a fair system of water management in Central Asia aimed at resolving all issues in the water and energy sector, including the construction of new hydropower structures on rivers, in accordance with universally recognized norms of international law and taking into account the interests of all states in the region.
