UNCTAD office to prepare an investment platform of Uzbekistan

The Permanent Mission of Uzbekistan to the UN Office and other international organizations in Geneva organized a webinar with representatives of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) as part of the implementation of the Action Plan ("Roadmap") to develop cooperation with the UN and its specialized institutions, Dunyo news agency reported.

From the Uzbek side, the webinar was attended by Deputy Foreign Minister Sherzod Asadov, representatives of the Agency for Attracting Foreign Investments under the Ministry of Investment and Foreign Trade, and the diplomatic mission in Switzerland.

During the event, issues related to the preparation by UNCTAD of the "Review of the Investment Policy of Uzbekistan" and "Investment Guide" in our country were substantively discussed.

Chantal Dupasquier, head of the UNCTAD division for the preparation of investment reviews, presented a detailed presentation on the current trends in investment activities and policies in this area in Uzbekistan. She welcomed our country’s efforts to further improve the creation of an enabling environment for business and investment in the country.

The recent measures taken in the republic to attract foreign direct investment were especially noted. In particular, Chantal Dupasquier stressed that in recent years, there has been a positive trend in the volume of attracting foreign direct investment to the republic in Uzbekistan. A unified law “On investments and investment activities” was adopted and a “single window” mechanism was introduced to facilitate investments. Also, a new solid legal framework has been created for the regulation of public-private partnerships and others.

UNCTAD Economic Advisor Maha El-Masri prepared a presentation on the electronic platform of the Investment Policy Review of Uzbekistan, which will provide detailed online information on investment procedures in the country, favorable investment regime in Uzbekistan, which is especially important for large investors in commercial companies involved in attracting investment when making appropriate decisions.

As a result of the event, UNCTAD representatives expressed their readiness to assist in the further development of the Investment Policy Review of Uzbekistan and the Investment Guide for our country, as well as organizing their visit to Tashkent in 2021.
